Wanted, Sonora Dendritic jasper
« on: February 27, 2021, 02:19:36 AM »

I put a picture of a cabochon of what I believe is Sonora Dendritic jasper. Any similar looking material would be fine that has some of the distinctive feathering and patterns. I prefer slabs but would consider rough.

Here’s some painted stone I picked up at quartzite a couple years back. I’m preforming a sphere, does this look like it would work? I can cut and send you some slabs.

Let me know.

I bought a small slab of stuff with similar colors and patterns that was identified as apach rhyolite. Very attractive, whatever it is.

Felicia....  The joy of rocks is trying to keep up on all the names given to the same type of jasper. Sometimes it is just similar jasper from another location. Or like with plume agate from the Graveyard Point area where many of us gave each mine a different name. I shall look up Apache Rhyolite, I think it may have been mined by Steve Schultz???? thanks

Apache Rhyolite, often called Mimbres Apache Rhyolite, is a different beast.  It's found in New Mexico as I recall, and at its best it displays unearthly scenes in shades of maroon against a background of bluish-gray often with a different shade of maroon in contrast.  The slab shown below isn't top grade but it's the only image I could locate in my archive.

Yep, I even found some cabochons I made from it. Steve Schultz digs a couple similar varieties of Rhyolite in the Owyhees which make nice cabochons as well. I will still be looking for some of the Sonoran variety if anyone sees a dealer at a show or???? where ever.

thanks to all

I received some free slabs from ToTheSummit and Sandsave....  Since they would not take any money I made a $35 donation to the Forum.

thanks to all,
