Title: Does this have asbestos in it?
Post by: ileney on July 07, 2017, 11:41:03 AM
I know this looks like it may fall apart in cutting, but I'd like to try cabbing it IF it isn't full of asbestos as it comes from nearby and I am trying to make a bracelet of all local rocks in different colors. It's another Maine beach rock, green with white (though the white looks darker than it is in these pictures). Does anyone know if the white is asbestos or if it would be safe to cut/grind? Thank you for any information.

Does not look like any of the asbestos minerals.

You are a bit north of the New England asbestos region which ends in Vermont. It looks as if it could be serpentine which has asbestos like minerals in it  but the percentages are usually low. No dry sanding and you should be fine.

Many thanks for the advice. I'll use plenty of water and see if it holds up or flakes apart.

The blinding sun is not coming through my window now and it looks more like a piece of schist. You of course still have silica concerns.
