playing with the quarts today.
Kind of like working with it actually, still have to polish it.
Dont know, pendant or ring. havent made my mind up yet.
Still on the dop

Nice looking :WEEEE: Rutile cabs are one of my favorites. They look really nice when backed with a truly black stone It shows off the rutile very nicely.
-
That's my next step, I usually complete the face of the cab then put the backing on.
-
That is going to be very nice with the strong rutile needles.
-
The needles are real heavy on the bottom side, I intentionally cabbed the round on the other side. Worked awesome
-
Is like a bunch of shooting stars through the milky way
-
I do not like to work quartz but I would make one exception, rutile. That is some awesome stone and it looks like you got a great shine on it.

in these photos. its still in the really really really worn out 600 stage lol
i see some dull in the center of the cab still so i will 600 it more today.
I will 330 epoxy some black rock i have here for a backing also.
I ruined my .009 thick diamond blade yesterday so i have to use my trim saw on the loretone.
i liked that .009 blade too.
-
stupid 330 epoxy bubbled up on me, into the acetone this piece now sits.
-
heres a bead in progress for a pendant which i may sell on my new Etsy (that website name sounds so feminine :LOLOL:).
Still in pre polish, i covered this whole stone with a heavy coating of Sharpie permanent marker and sanded and sanded until every itty bitty speck of black was gone from the whole stone.
Now, after all the lines with black ink were worn away, its ready for cerrum oxide and uncle felt.

the rutilated quartz is a winner any day; looking good so far, if you get the backing on it will really pop
-
i need to learn how to make the adhesive NOT have bubbles when i mix it.
I might just superglue one on also.
It will never come out of the bezel anyhow.
As long as the person wearing it knows, NO CHEMICALS.
-
Love rutilated quartz. Nice cab. It will be gorgeous when backed.
I've haven't had trouble with my 330 bubbling up. I've found its all about being careful during the mixing and application stage not to introduce air. If you 'whip' it when mixing you are asking for trouble. I do an easy, flat stir with a toothpick on a paper plate taking care not to whip in any bubbles and then apply carefully.
-
What ToTheSummit said. Mix slowly taking care not to lift the toothpick out of the epoxy to avoid adding air. When it's mixed thoroughly, pop any bubbles you see with a toothpick or a pin. Spread the epoxy on your backing and then pop any bubbles you introduce doing that. You can get rid of more bubbles if you heat the epoxy on the backing with a hot light bulb. Pop if any come up. When you put the cab on top of the backing, start from one end and and slowly lower it at an angle on the backing to squeeze out any more bubbles. When it's flat on the backing, slowly move the cab in a circular motion over the backing with a little pressure (not much!) to squeeze out the last of the little buggers.
If you want to cheat, spray the back of the cab with black spray paint, let dry and don't worry about the bubbles showing. :WEEEE:
I wouldn't use superglue on something like this. You'd have to tell your customer not to put it in water. Water and superglue don't go well together.

One of my favorites. So much movement going on in the clear Quartz.
-
for the pendant.
I purchased a praying hands charm. i will be altering it into a bail.
I will mount the praying hands on the pendant, all the golden rutile needles will turn into golden blazing prayers from above to the wearer of the stone. (most likely my wife)
-
Nice work. I can't wait to see it finished.
-
the praying hands showed up in mail yesterday, they are PERFECT in size!
The piece is going to look great if i can make the pinch bail correctly!
I also recieved two antler pinch bails i will make something with that camo rock i cut up also.
-
Ditto, I really want to see the finished piece!
