Nephi Pet Wood
« on: February 28, 2015, 06:28:30 PM »

Here are some cabs of petrified wood from Nephi, Im posting to show the seems in the stone, they really look fractured, but they are solid. The first one has them following the black. The second one runs up and down and on the left side looks like it is fractured and really ready to pop out.The third on has one running top to bottom. The fourth has them all over. It's really hit and miss and takes away from a otherwise a beautiful stone

Where's nephi? I really like the shape of the third piece.. You can really see all the small fractures in the fourth..

Nephi is in Utah. We mainly go to collect pet Palm. The pet wood is a bonus. They seem like tiny agate seams. Sometimes they don't show until your on the 600 wheel. I really like the colors and patterns so I'll keep cabbing.. Sometimes the beauty of the stone is its imperfections

Here are few cut ready to cab. Look at the one on the bottom left. I'll post a separate pic of it. Looks like it's been glued together.. Totally different grain in the center! Crazy huh.

That is some pretty wild looking stuff!   :headbang:
I do love the color patterns in it and when you cab up that last posted piece, you will have to share!   :blob1:

It's a place in Utah, I googled it.  In fact, I found this table of contents that shows all these cool materials you can find in Utah and I want to move to Utah now.  See page 63.  :D

Found this article on it:

OH!  Sandsave, this is gorgeous material!  Palm wood is more stable than tree wood but you are still lucky to have the healed fractures and the patterns and color in these are just gorgeous, I think!  Warm and luxurious.

Did you collect this wood yourself?

Gina, it's funny you put the link for the rock hounding book in, if you follow the directions in the book you'll never find any Palm! Check out the Rock & Gem issue October 2013 field trip article. The Aaron's live in my neighborhood and are my rock hounding buddies. Doug is the Nephi man, we always are looking for Palm so the pet wood is a nice bonus. It's simply beautiful stuff.

I cabbed that Nephi, Utah pet wood I posted Sunday..Let's start on the first pic, you can obviously see the crazy breaks in the color and where some bug was eating (center two small holes) and the top half looks like normal Nephi pet. On the 2nd pic,  you can see breaks in the color from top to bottom, also the path the bug took as he went (gold), right in the center you can see the apex of the dark color from the 1st pic.
I think this some of the neatest material I've ever cabbed! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
That's why we keep rock hounding in Nephi!!!

When you decide to sell some of that, post it in the sale or trade section here.  I know you have some interested buyers.  :)
