Burro Creek, AZ...end of the month
« on: September 10, 2015, 08:02:49 PM »

Taking a rockhounding trip at the end of the month.  Gonna head back down toward Wileys Well area, but I thought I might jaunt over towards Burro Creek, AZ for a day or two since I've never been there.  Problem is that I know nothing of the area outside of stories people have shared.  Anyone have any tips, maps, experiences from there they would be willing to share?  And if anyone is in the area between Sept 26-30 you would be more than welcome at my campfire.  Rockhounding with others is a pleasure I rarely have.

So I'm off to Wileys Well this coming weekend.  The forum has been crazy-quiet this month so I wanted to again invite anyone to come join me.  I know some of you AZ folk aren't that far of a drive away!

Gonna stick to the Wileys Well area.  Lots to see and explore around there still.  Not gonna venture into AZ this time (unless I get a bug and decide to drive to Quartzsite one day).  But you can find me at Coon Hollow campground each evening for sure.  Decided I would try the campground instead of rough camping in the desert this time.

If you see this...
I'm in Queen Creek.  I have no idea where that is in reference to the Burro Creek area you are going to be playing in.
That said, I make mean coffee and I cook and bake well.  You're welcome anytime, and I have a nice backyard for pitching a tent, and barring that I have a spare room with it's own bathroom.  I also have RV parking in my side yard.

Well, last minute change of plans I think. Not that it really matters since this is a solo trip (as they usually are).  But I planned the end of Sept hoping the last of the summer heat was behind us.  I don't mind temps in the 90s and pushing close to triple digits, but it turns out we are getting one last blast of summer heat this weekend.  Its supposed to be 110 Fri and close to that through the weekend in the Wileys Well area.  While I am a desert rat, and I often hound in the hot desert summers, I don't think an extended stay would be very enjoyable for me in that kind of weather.   Its nice to go home and shower at the end of a day of hounding in 110 degrees.  5 Days of camping would just get tiring.  So no Wileys Well this trip.

Instead it looks like this is shaping up to be a Utah exploration weekend.  I got leads on dozens of places to hound all over Utah.  And the weather is much nicer.  A friend just bought property at Duck Creek so I will camp there with him on the weekend and hound So Utah for a couple days.  Then I'll make my way towards central Utah and see what I can rustle up.  Besides, its always fun to explore new areas.  I'll share some pictures and a report of my somewhat haphazard adventure when I return.

Oh, and thanks for the invite Amanda.  I will take you up on that someday.  I love Arizona and I try to get down there every once in a while.

Where in Burro Creek should I go?  I am cutting up a beautiful purple stone from there, somewhere?
I anyone planning a trip to Burro Creek that knows where to dig for the purple stone? Do any of you have contacts with claim owners?

Burro creek has stuff everywhere. The good purple stuff is inside the Bagdad copper mine now and is fenced with chain link and razor wire. The normal Burro Creek.purple turns gray in sunlight after s few days. Best just drive in and wander, you will see some diggings. There is many different types there. I can find my wsy around but GPS is good to get you out. If u camp in a tent beware wild burros messing your stuff up looking for goodies. There is s nice campground there and the creek has some nice stuff in it. The good stuff is further up the road where the bridge crosses. Go behind the store on a old road to get to a good area too. Sorry but that's the best I can do.

I can check with my buddy on the GPS cords.  My gps died a while back and don't think I have them.  The pics are from the canyon directly outside the mine however my friend told me about a month ago the mine expanded and took our location.  The GPS cords would get you as close as possible though.  Beautiful Purple material with those gold plumes.

Found one last pic of the pile of material we pulled out.  We broke one of the sledges and as you can see from the size of the blocks they were big.  We finally took my truck jack and propped it against the floor and used it to break the huge pieces free in the cave we were digging in.

I am glad I got that pile.  I found an old map we highlighted and then overlaid that on updated aerial imagery and the 2nd pic shows the approximate location of our old digs, now under the mines settling pond/lake.   :sad5: :Bash:  :embarrassed: :sad5:  Sorry for the bad news, there was so much great material there.  I am sure others have good locations in the area and there is another source.  I will still try and get the cords just to make sure.

Just FYI, I would not suggest the road in from Nothing, AZ (dirt road behind the abandoned shack.) It's about 7 miles of fair road to the mouth of the canyon. Then it gets hairy... giant boulders requiring a rock crawler. I've taken my old Land Cruiser in that way a couple times. Doable, but with a significant pucker factor.

Instead, continue on highway 93 toward Wickeup. Pay attention to side roads, there is a sign reading 'Burro Creek Crossing Rd.' Take that road to the right (East) and continue about 15 miles of well-graded dirt road. Before you get into the canyon proper you can eyeball the endless cut-able material.

Trust me, it may seem like extra off-road miles, but your vehicle will thank me for the advice.

I got the GPS coords and placed them in Google and the pin is West of the current settling pond _HOWEVER_ I was told that the mine was expanding and it was fenced so I panned down the road  zoomed in and saw what looked like a fence way down the road.  I called Pat McMahon this morning he he said that the road indeed is fenced with lots of no trespassing signs about a mile from the actual digs where the material I showed came out and that pretty much lines up with what I saw on Google maps.  What I has told this morning was that the mine intends to use the whole canyon as a tailings dump.  I'll add a google pic of the collecting site along with the fence location.

Link is the pin in fence location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B035'10.9%22N+113%C2%B019'21.2%22W/@34.5823051,-113.298996,7653m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d34.5863611!4d-113.3225556

THIS GOES WITHOUT SAYING but I am saying it.  If the area is under claim or posted No Trespassing DON'T.
