You know the old adage...
« on: October 09, 2015, 07:20:34 PM »

" Red sky in morning -rock hounds get butt's kicked". That could have summed today up but we pressed on . We drove to over 4,000 feet to collect a certain rather large rock and it was only threatening rain but when we drove about a mile to the east we were engulfed in a wall of water falling from the sky. Windshield wipers on full and we still could not see which is not good on a narrow poorly maintained mountain road with tremendous drop offs all around. We decided to turn around immediately which helped as the rain which was driven by 40 mph winds was now battering the back of the truck.I practice turning on a road that is no wider than the truck is long ' a skill that paid off today. Having gotten our main objective we decided to head down as fast as the road would allow before more trees came down and trapped us . I forgot the double bitted ax that goes behind the truck seat all fall and winter so we really had no choice. Down near the bottom we stopped for a picture as that side of the mountain was much more sane. What do you do when you could drown if you look up? You go watch fish obviously which we did before heading home. A great day none -the less.

sometimes those roads that turn to goose poop are better to get off before they do; glad you got down safe.

Silly man, a double bitted axe is only for showing your friends how good you are at sharpening things. CHAIN SAWS are for "maybe I will get stuck behind a down tree" especially if you are on crutches. Be safe my friend.

Beautiful photos too.

Lovely sunset though! And fish. And it sounds like that calls for a new chain saw...

Sunrise! By sunset I'm whacked. I'm a luddite and love an ax. I have logged many trees with an ax and once cut a 3 foot diameter dug fir that fell across a road with one. Time consuming ? Yes it was but it was not a waste of time, it can be a very pleasurable skill to properly work with an ax.It helps to be stubborn.

There is no tool like an old tool LOL
I always try to work with hand tools, there is a pleasure in the skillfull wielding of them that you don't experience with power tools

When I was a kid my brothers and I went camping in Yellowstone Park. The guy camping next to us pulled out his axe and started chopping some wood. The axe glanced off and buried itself in his ankle and it was not pretty. I have never owned an axe but I have owned several chain saws.

I have done a bit of logging which is dangerous in itself but a chainsaw does not require accuracy which I am short on in most of the areas where it is needed. The only time I have really practiced accuracy was with a rifle in the military for obvious reasons.

I have a hatchet that is not sharp enough to cut me unless I accidentally get my hand stuck in a bears butt and need to chop it off to get away. It also works good for driving and removing tent stakes.

When I walk past the double bitted axes in the hardware store I think "boy those sure are pretty, I should buy one". Then I walk away and buy a pocket knife because I have a bow saw and a long cable, neither of which are dangerous. The pocket knife is for carving a heart with the words Jim + rocks in the tree for all to see.

When I went to Costa Rica for a week with my friend (he has a big piece of property there) he was pointing out to me how many people you see with missing fingers.  He said its a real problem because they use machetes in the jungle all the time and its easy to lop off a finger when you are not paying attention.  A machete is an unforgiving instrument of disfigurement.

I also carry a bow saw, but its not going to cut through a tree that has fallen in your path.  An axe is the most reliable tool for such an emergency.  Unfortunately I suffer from poor axe skills. Fortunately trees never fall across your path in the desert (where I spend most of my time).

An ax scares the hell out of me but so did the thought of having kids and that worked out fine as well. Case hardened wood is an absolute bear with the ax and many people get hurt trying to chop it. My daughter and I used a seven foot misery whip to cut huge fallen trees on this property when we first moved here. A little kid gets a big ego boost when they hang onto the end of a big saw like that. I could cut through 5 foot diameter trees by myself with it but don't tell her. That is truly a scary tool to carry on very rough steep ground.
