chainsaw core drill
« on: December 19, 2015, 12:38:45 PM »

I spent the week at the American Geophysical Union conference.  Lots of cool science going on there.  When strolling through the vendors, I saw this beast on a table and just had to share.  They put a clutch system, an type of pin vise and a water swivel on a chain saw.

those are cool for hard rock miners, getting that core before blowing a whole hill away to get the minerals

If I liked chainsaws that would be great. Having cut huge amounts of firewood in my life I still like a nine foot crosscut best . It starts if I do. I have never seen one on a chainsaw before but electric drill type core cutters are used a lot on  big bconstruction jobs . My uncle was head plumber on a  a big high rise drug production facility that had a seperate glass plumbing system  for waste acids and bases and when a new drug came along the production process would change and they would have to drill through concrete floors and walls to facilitate the new glass piping. The rebar they drilled through made the drilling more difficult as it was softer than the concrete so the drill would tend to wander but the steel was soft and malleable compared to the concrete so it couuld clog the core drill diamond.I worked in an agate mine where we blasted every few years. The holes we like 30 feet deep and the driller did not take long. 30 inch bore wells are now pretty standard in areas of the west with lots of center pivot irrigation a nd they are drilled long ways through solid basalt. Industrial diamond technology seems to be way ahead of that provided for lapidary.

those waste acid pipes are cool, i did a tear out of the science dept at UW, i was genuinely intrigued.
I kept a bunch of it for keepsakes, but they all broke when my shed burned down.

My uncle designed plumbing systems from brownstone renovations to  a  huge beer brewery. He says it tastes a lot better before it is pasteurized. This drug company was not satisfied with the glass pipe connections in their previous factories so they hired him to sit in a lab with a glass blower and brainstorm for two years before construction started. They had 40 high rises in the end  on the company campus in Nutley N.J. which they just abandoned , just walked away from it. A lot of construction workers died making those buildings but my father and uncle made it out fine. It is going to become a medical school , something positive so all that effort was not wasted.
