Wileys Well 2016 *Updated, trip report added
« on: March 18, 2016, 10:36:08 PM »

Off to Wileys Well in the morning.  Gonna spend 8 days there.  Lots of rocks to be had, but mostly I'm looking forward to sitting around a campfire each night and sleeping under the stars.  Not to say the rocks won't be awesome though!  Going to try to see some areas I missed last year, and since I borrowed a quad from a friend I should be able to explore some areas that I couldn't easily access in my truck last time.  Should be a fun week any way I slice it.

Looks like I'm ready to roll!

I'm excited but it looks dry and hot not at all wht I hound in so it will be exotic from our perspective up here. Be careful.

Back home safe and sound.  It was an awesome week in the desert!  I will have a full trip report to come, but for now I just need all my rockhound friends to wish me luck.  I am hoping for something nice when I cut this sucker open.  I pulled some nice geodes from the ash this week, but this one took the prize!  I never thought I would find a geode so large I can't even cut it in my clubs 24" saw!  Going to have to use a quickie saw to open this fella since no one in town has a 36" saw.  In reality I think there is a 75% chance this thing is just a dud, lots of boring rhyolite and a few embedded nodules inside.  But there is always a slim chance it is amazing inside when I cut it.  Either way it was the find of the week, and the icing on the cake of a great vacation.

Either way you had a real gift from nature. I have handled many of these and they are very dynamic on the outside. Good luck!

Wowza!  That thing is huge!  Hope it's totally beautiful inside once you get it cut.  Can't wait to see what's inside -- I can just imagine what you must be feeling.    :icon_sunny:

Looking forward to the trip report.

At the Opal Butte mine we had geodes up to 10 feet in diameter. I love to look at them and imagine the wild process that formed them. That one is very appealing, nice form. I think I need to go to Oregon soon  and see some more.

Sorry I'm slow on getting a trip report together.  I've been busy but I promise it will happen eventually.

I did cut the geode.  Used a quickie saw since no one around here has a 36" saw I could use.  As I thought it was mainly rhyolite inside, but there are some nice quartz stringers and some small veins of agate also.  I knew I wouldn't get lucky enough to bag a hollow beauty of that size, but it still looks nice anyway.  Even the rhyolite is a pretty mottled red color and will polish nicely.  And with the inclusions it will make for some pleasing finished faces.   I have a couple pieces I'm going to polish and make into bookends.

Heres the geode cut up.  The faces are a little rough, but not too bad.  I was able to do a pretty good job with the quickie saw. And now the pieces are small enough to fit in my 18" saw (barely) so I can trim the faces and get them prettied up.

Got all the pictures organized, resized, and uploaded to photobucket.  Don't have time to sit and write up the trip reprot tonight though.  But I'll get to it this week.

Here is what the big geode looks like on a freshly cut face.  The bookends should come out nice.
