Green mineral
« on: April 30, 2016, 09:32:27 AM »

Found this on the North Fork of the Teanaway River. It had some polish sitting in the river. It isn't agate or jasper. I vibe tumbled it with these quartz stones, and after the large grit cycle it was reduced in size but polished nicely. Then I made the mistake of putting it in with the agates for a second vibe cycle, with smaller grit. Not only did it shrink further, but the surface lost its nice polish and is now pitted.

Hardness is in the 5-6 range. It has a soapy feel in the hands that make it really pleasurable to touch. And I love the vibrant green hue. I'd like to find more of this and figure out how to work it!

Thanks. That makes sense, especially given the feel and the amount of serpentinite in the surrounding country rock.

If the area that looks like a manganese dendrite is in fact a dendrite I would vote for a piece of nephrite. The hardness is correct for either.
