Inspired to try some new knives - Dino Toothpick
« on: June 12, 2016, 03:06:04 PM »

It has been a long time since I did my Damascus folder with Jade scales and Tigereye inlay and back then I thought I was going to jump into knives.  Well that was it for a long time.  I decided to try again and bought a Buck Texas Toothpick and a couple Buck Canoe's  The Canoes are tough since I have 8" wheels and the canoe has a small negative radius on the blade side where the scales transition to the bolsters.  I gave it my best try, toothpick first and they turned out okay.  I can only get better right?  I will do separate posts for the 2 knives.

A friend got me to start making buckles and i'll tell you getting a stone to fit an irregular large oval with gritty inside bevel makes you take your time and sneak up on fits.  As for the glue, I use Loctite 325 and Loctite 7075 spray activator.  Michael Hoover turned me on to that although I think when doing a folder with dual bolsters I could have used regular epoxy as the 325 gives you less than 15 seconds to get the fit before it kicks it seems.

I'll attach a buckle image to show fit.  I put a question into the moderator earlier to ask where on the boards a buckle would go as there doesn't seem to be a good spot.  I get the Buckles from Larry the Willow creek owner.  I told him what I was doing and he showed me a knife Michael Hoover made for him.

Larry is a great guy.  We trade knives for stone from time to time so he will hold some of his best stone aside for me when he gets a hankering for some knives.....
