I live in Hawaii, we have lava rocks and that's pretty much it. Lava flows have some wonderful variety and can be quite stunning, many lava rocks have olivine but very little of it is gem quality. I'm getting itchy for something with a little more sparkle, part of the reason I joined this forum. My father noticed and gifted me a brand new Lortone 33b, while I was shopping for tumbling rough I came across "unsearched" lots, also known as mine run or gem dirt.

I'm pretty skeptical of what I'd find and was wondering if anyone had any experience with supposed "unsearched" lots. For now I'm going to stick with mixed lots of tumbling rough, I haven't tumbled anything in more than a decade so I feel the need to get reacquainted before trying anything fancy.

Additionally any advice on good sources for tumbling rough would be appreciated. I already have the rock shed bookmarked as a recommended site but other sources would rock. (pun intended)

They are salted with real gems, but are small and of a poor quality but good colors. I have bought my grandson some of that at a cavern tour. It was fun but nothing of value.
 What's a usps flat rate box cost to Hawaii? I have a surplus of rocks and slabs I may make you a deal?

Thats pretty much what I suspected. A small flat rate to Hawaii is 5 or 6 bucks, what kind of rough you got hanging around?

Slabs or rough rock?  Jasper's, picture jasper,  agates, lapis Nevada , sodalite , tigereye, obsidian, California jade, Wyoming jade,  ect. What are you interested in?  I have rocks all over the place i run across rock that I forgot I had. The administrators my want you to get in your min of 50 posts to buy and sell and trade?  If they do post like crazy !!!

There are some very reputable sellers that mine run really is a good deal. I know many people in these forums have used village smithy opal. I bought 3 ounce of mine run of Ethiopian opal and it was a huge success. That said I would probably never buy mine run from a  vendor that didn't come recommended.

The 50 post rule is to prevent people from joining the forum just try to sell stuff to members without contributing to the community.  It doesn't apply to folks who want to buy something.  Everyone can see the posts in the Buy/Sell/Trade area.  Folks who are not yet at 50 posts can't create a new topic and try to sell there, though.

I have a question. Do you only sell to people of the islands or to the mainland also? the reason I asl is because I do not want to incur the wrath of Pele......... I'm just saying ........LOL

If that question is for me, I haven't really done much selling. But most things are for sale. I was just offering to help her get started with her new hobby. But if you need rocks I always have more than I will ever use. So I guess the answer is yes. I do spheres and I end up with a lot of slabbing material.  I like to trade for big rocks to make spheres out. I always have a saw running cutting something

Do the USPS flat rate boxes work for Hawaii also?  I always wondered about that.  I would go crazy living in a place where I couldn't collect rocks of all types.  I'm sure you'll find plenty of folks around here willing to sell or trade rock with you.  As John said many of us have more rock sitting around then we will ever use.  I know you don't have rocks to trade, but some uniquely Hawaiian things might suffice, like puka shell strands or other Hawaiian stuff.  My wife grew up in Hawaii and she loves anything that reminds her of the Islands.

LOL, no worries. No Hawaiian rocks are used in my designs, I import all my materials. Guaranteed curse free.

Flat rate boxes to Hawaii do work, out here we pay a little more for them but the price doesn't change when shipping from the mainland to Hawaii. As for trading, I do have wire wraps that I'd be willing to trade. I have some really nice lions paw seashells that I've wrapped, but no sunrise shells at the moment.
