What's your opinion of this motor for a home made grinder?
« on: July 24, 2016, 09:48:20 AM »

Hey everybody,
I am going to be building my own grinder/sander/polisher and have already purchased a D14 8" Poly grinder (in excellent condition!) but was wondering if you guys think this motor would be appropriate for the machine:

BALDOR ELECTRIC 1/3 HP General Purpose Motor, Capacitor-Start, 1725 Nameplate RPM, Voltage 115/230, Frame 56
http://www.baldor.com/catalog/L3501M

I am still suuuper new to everything but have been doing a ton of research and basically just tried to look at what motors Diamond Pacific, Barranca Diamond, Cab Kind, etc. are using on their machines.  I also wanted to stick to an American made motor.  Which motor would you use if you built a home made, 2 wheel grinder?

That motor will be ideal for your D14 Poly arbor. You could probably add a jackshaft & run 2 or more DD14 Poly's with it.

1/3hp should run your grinder fine. I have a 1/3hp on my old Fran Tom and I don't think I can apply enough pressure to slow it down.I picked up a 1/3 hp motor at a garage sale for $20 a couple of weeks ago. set it aside for a replacement or a new project. of course last year I needed a motor and couldn't find a good used one anywhere and had to buy new.

That should be perfect.  You may save some money by going to 3450 rpm and using pulley ratios to get the proper speed.  I always pick up 1/3 and 1/2 hp motors whenever I find them cheap.  $15 or $20 is pretty common at yard sales.  I'm always finding more things I want to build.  Also, over the years I have managed to burn out a few.  Usually due to abuse.  As in trying to make a 1/3 hp motor work where it should be 1/2 or using a split phase instead of capacitor start.

Thanks for all of your responses everyone!  I went to a flea market 2 weeks ago and found a 3/4hp Westinghouse motor for $25 and had it in my hands for a little bit then set it back down because I wasn't sure if it would be too much h/p for the grinder.  I suppose I could have used it for a saw...
Yeah I'm definitely stalking ebay right now looking for the Baldor, they're so expensive brand new!
