Off to Utah
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:53:49 AM »

So I'm packed and ready to roll out.  Going to meet Sandsave tomorrow morning to see some of his spots in Central Utah.  I will be in Utah til next Wednesday.  Looking forward to a great few days and I'll post a trip report upon returning.  Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone!

I gave the grand tour of the immediate Nephi area! Did manage to collect a bit of yellow feather jasper and show Karl our palm area. We only had time to dig for a hour or so, but he should do ok if he spends a day digging. We found one small palm and a nice conifer.
He should have a blast!!!

Big thanks to Jay (Sandsave) and Dalton (that dude is a serious rockhound!).  It was a whirlwind day and they showed me all their secret (and some not-so-secret) sites.  That area is a wealth of amazing stones!  I spent some time on Sunday still poking around the area and getting the lay of the land.  Returned to some of the sites they showed me but I didn't get into any serious digging.  It will take many trips up there to feel like I've made a dent in it all.  I'm looking forward to going back.

The rest of my trip as I worked my way south was a lot of fun also.  Got into a bunch of obsidian and gathered some great agates as well.  And I had a great time just driving through lots of lonely places I've never been before.  I put 1200 miles on my truck by the time it was over, and much of that was on dirt roads.  I saw lots of great scenery and I'll share some pictures when I get a proper trip report together.

Again, thanks Jay.  Not just for the awesome tour of your digs but also for all the great stones you brought to share with me.  My wife loves the sphere!  Not enough to let me build a machine and take up her parking spot in the garage, but if I ever expand my shop space a sphere machine may be my next project.

Have you cabbed any of the Jasper yet? If so did you post them here?

Sorry Jay, been slacking on getting a trip report together.  I had some problems with my truck upon return from the trip.  $1200 in repairs in the last 2 weeks to get things right, as well as some of my own time/labor on some things I could do.  And my cabbing machine was torn down for some modifications at the same time so I have cut no cabs either.  I have, however, slabbed up a lot of material from the trip.  There are stacks of slabs on my bench right now waiting to hit the trim saw and grinding wheels.  I'm about ready to put Frankenstone (my custom sawing/cabbing machine) back together now that the truck is back to working order so I should be spinning off some finished stones before long.  I am going out of town next weekend again but I will be back to cutting cabs soon.  I should probably take some photos of the slabs I've been cutting at least.  I collected some great material, and some of the stuff you gave me is awesome also.
