Slicing up a big Dino bone...
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:47:36 AM »

Cut this leg bone last weekend with the help of a friend's 24" HP saw. Approx 40lb rough. Very pleased with the inside - particularly the fortification core with a well-mineralized cavity. Smokey quartz, barite, calcite, as well as several unidentified crystals (maybe rutile or schorl and some little florets of crystals)

Enjoy!

Never seen one like that either. Big-dollar collector slab there... .

There are three pieces from this bone... Two thick end sections (7lb and 9lb) and a 22lb central section (shown in the driveway, below).

I hope I look that good 25 million years from now!  Awesome dino bone...had no idea they could morph into such a work of art.  Where do you find such a rare item?

Initially the plan was to slab up the back 4" for cabs. When it was cut and I saw the cavity opened up into a nice pocket inside, cabs were off the menu :)

That's huge how much was it? I can't find any decent dino bone on ebay today. Way too expensive.

Thanks all,

Nirena, as others have mentioned gembone prices have been going up as international demand increases and supply of good rough dwindles. Few materials combine beauty with such improbable natural history to capture the imagination the way gembone does.

Good pieces can still be found at mortal prices if you're willing to study up and take a chance on unproven rough. You never know what will be inside, but there are clues that can increase your odds of finding something good.

The crystallized cavity surrounded by agate makes this one best suited for specimen collectors. Full rounds like this are rare and tempting as it is, I can't slab this up for cabs.
