October Hike
« on: October 10, 2016, 05:45:10 PM »

It's 60 and sunny (I could get used to this in October) so there were adventures. No rocks to speak of (the hills contained milky, much-fractured banded agate in small quantities, but nothing that looked decent) but the scenery was nice. I have found large quartz crystals with faint amethyst 'ghosts' inside on this ridge but deliberately avoided the spot to see what else might be around. Well, not much in the places I went! The ridge line goes from red volcanic to yellow bentonite to shale very quickly. There's water farther up the canyon but as I was by myself I didn't go that far up. Could see cattails in pockets in the rock though. Lots of fresh deer sign and evidence of coyotes spreading bones around.

One enormous old juniper tree (an actual old-growth, up in the rocks where it belongs)

Fun with a tiny deer skull.

Looks like the hike was great.  Is there lions in that area ? That deer skull looks like a loin kill. That country looks like some of the areas we hunt in Nevada

The deer skull was very small, so may have been an undersized buck that didn't make it through the winter. Coyotes spread the bones out and chew up the noses. We do have lions but there's an extermination notice out for them and a state trapper will bring dogs out to take any lion that sets up residency, as it's too dangerous to let them coexist that close to that many children. (There is a water park behind one of those hills.) I don't totally agree with the zero tolerance policy (and it doesn't apply to the whole area, just to the private property I'm hiking on) but it's probably the only reason I feel safe hiking alone and without a firearm or dog. I have found tracks and kills, but not for a long time; last lion tracked here was ten months ago and it was a transient, just crossed through and headed out of the county.

I see clouds in those photos. The Palouse around Pullman has been very overcast with periods of very heavy rain. Frost at my place this morning.Fall is here and the big storms are just around the corner in this part of the country.

Yep. Went from 70 and sunny to a freeze warning overnight. Those clouds were the leading edge of the new air mass.
