Aquamarine Hunting in Idaho
« on: November 06, 2016, 06:36:23 PM »

In my younger day's I made three trips into the Sawtooth mountains of Idaho in search of the elusive aquamarine and topaz.   This area is now closed to collecting, a decision I do not at all agree with.  Anyway I would be happy to spend some time talking about where we went and what we found.  I would propose three different threads over the course of this fall.  It is too soggy here for much hounding besides in my rock pile.  I don't want to waste the groups time with old news but who knows maybe the SNRA will relent and all collecting with hand tools again. In that case my tales will be fairly useful.  I won't take up bandwidth if folks aren't interested.  We didn't bring camera's so it won't be quite as interesting.   If I should post someplace else on the site let me know that as well.

Regards
Mike

I also collected there a lot. I rock climbed to vugs out on blank faces of granite  and had marvelous adventures. All I took in was a bit of food , a bivy sack and sleeping bag and a big screw driver for opening the vugs.Wild days.

Watching and listening I am! I love a good story!!#

I remember riding my ole Paint stud hoss thru the Sonora desert checking fence and looking for a turquoise vein by chasing float. An the only company I had was my Hangin Tree Stockdog named Mic. SUDDENLY Mic jumped in the chaparral and creosote above me and chased a big Tom mountain lion across the horizon!!!   I miss my desert.....

Okay I will post trip one in a few days.  I want to dig out my maps and make sure I am providing the correct locations my memory isn't what it used to be.  I also plan to spend some bandwidth talking about how I got ready for the trips.  I got interested in the area after a March ski trip to Sun Valley in about 1982 or 1983.  I decided to stop in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) headquarters.  They had some aquamarine specimens on display and I thought wow how cool is that.  The ranger on duty assured me that the fly fishing in the high lakes was excellent and I would not regret a trip.  So when I returned to Seattle it was time to start getting ready for what I was sure would be a very successful trip.  Stay tuned!
