What would cause a dino bone to go black?
« on: December 06, 2016, 01:44:41 PM »

Other than scheming and lies. The pic looked great when I received the bone the slabbing area is completely black. I can tell it's a dino bone. Hope there's something under that. Could it have happened in the mail? Or I just got a shoddy deal? The other's were great. Wonder if you can change the surface thru chemical or heating means? Any ideas? It might be 2 inches deep have to take a good look at it. Will post pics in a bit. THx

I've never heard of it turning black.  Saw oil residue??  Even that seems a bit unlikely.

Why don't you show a few pictures. Bleaching would likely to be ineffective. In 40 years of this trade nothing like this has come up so I imagine the original picture  was incorrect.

I agree, we sorely need pictures to help with this problem you have.

Is it just black on the surface (as if it contacted something to cause a chemical film to form on the surface)?  I.E. can you scratch it and see some other color underneath? I would not use bleach or acid on it until you have an idea whether you have a black stone or a different colored stone with a black film.  Sand paper, steel wool, or comet cleanser would be obvious choices if you think it reacted with something it contacted in shipping.  The only dino bone I've ever collected was black and hence a disappointing lapidary find so be forewarned that all dino fossils are as colorful as the primo reds and greens you see folks brag about.  Keep us informed please.

Sorry I haven't posted a pic. During that acid attack on everything I still have to check my camera, and I've been sick. The purchse was from a rock store in the states from a lady that wasn't even aware she had the stones in her possession. But there was no black stone in the pic, and it's black it's a dinobone I can see the vessels. If I get strong enough I'll get a pic and slab it.
