Well done Neal! Your one of the good guys.
I am blessed to have many Red tails in my local area out here in the boonies. However, I also have a few Great Horned Owls in the area also, and the two raptors are arch enemies! It is not uncommon that 2-3 times a year to get a call from local neighbors within 5-8 miles away reporting that they have found a Red tail in the yard with its head removed! The body stays completely intact but head is severed nearly surgically! That is the tell tale sign that Great Horned Owl is in the area and the Red tail lost the battle! I have never witnessed the battle myself but have been called to at least a dozen "battle fields". Upon closer inspection of surrounding tall trees, power poles and barn roofs one will always find the territory markers of a rabbit, ground squirrel or other mall animal draped at the highest point for other Owls to see! I have great reverence for both birds.
Last year I was blessed to have a mated pair of Great Snowy Owls take up residence in an old barn 1/2 mile away from my home! Very rare this far south for mate pairs as they are quite singular most of their lives. Want to talk bout a huge bird!!!! So many friend s of mine say that the endless flat fields of the Midwest where I live are boring, I must say nay nay! This is the area where Rapters, and their quarry do the best!
Thank you again Neal for your kind actions! , and sharing the photos!
