Lavic is one of my favorite places to hound. It is on the edge of the distance for a good day trip. There is a Dairy Queen nearby so we have hot food, real bathrooms, gas and most importantly ice cream :). The dirt roads are pretty well maintained so cars can get just about everywhere. The material is mostly on the surface so you don't need to dig. While i would not say the material is plentiful, if you try you will come home with some nice pieces of the target rock so it is a great place for a beginner and expert alike. What really gets me are the colors. The reds and oranges are just so vivid you almost can't help make something beautiful if you do a half way decent cab. The greens are so deep and rich and you get such a mix of colors. I went with a guide who has been hounding in this area for a couple of decades and you can't beat local knowledge. First we went to a place where we got some good 10 lb chunks of jasper with just a little digging. Then we went out to one of the main areas in Lavic and passed The Searchers rock club out of LA. They were taking a noon siesta since it was starting to get into the high 80s and we figured they probably cleaned out the area around their camp so we moved to the other side of the railroad tracks. Anyway enough talking, on to the eye candy ":)
