Unfortunately yellow and orange are a very tough sell with the general public.Over the years of selling I learned to avoid them, why bother cutting stones that will not sell, and learned that pink is also a very difficult color to sell. Do not be fooled by how often a stone is looked at or touched as those stones almost never sell and if they do not sell after three shows I eliminated them as they distracted people from the other stones. What people say and how they spend their money are often quite different.

     I agree with Lithic..  but I always keep a couple stones of the less popular colors and large sizes for the odd sale. I have picked up some very loyal customers because I had the large cabochon or unusual color when that one person came along.  But selling rough or slabs is a volume deal and makes it tough.
   The one brecciated piece with an orange hue looks to be what I would see as a hotter piece for the market.

What would you say ard the best selling colors?

    Color is only a small part of a good rock. Quality, honesty and a rock that will take a good polish rank way up there. Sadly, many cheap'o  have found out there is always someone who they can fool. So much rock is sold as Owyhee Jasper, etc that is just cheap crap. A good BS story and such has sold a lot of rock.
   Also realize that never every rock is worth 10 dollars a pound. There is a huge market for pretty rock that is a buck or two a pound. I sell a lot of rock I mine that I have no use for in flat rate boxes for cheap. Not worth my time to hold out for more money. In case your wondering, my good stuff has been in magazines and several books. And I still love every time I find a pretty no name rock in a stream.
     Here are some average grade pieces I am digging in the Owyhee's which is not Owyhee Picture Jasper.

The fun for me is in finding, and slabbing.
I try to sell enough to keep my blade lubed.
Maybe as i progress, i will try my hand at polishing.

Just now saw this thread. As a rock tumbler, I think the 3 in the center - the two green mossy looking pieces and the Stone Canyon wanna be - would make some fine tumbled rocks.
May not be want some would want to cab, don't know as I don't make cabs, but I'd tumble the heck out of those 3!

     I do not see any indications on the stones that they are river rock (smooth skins).   Is it just not showing on your pieces in the photos?

I agree 55fossil, if they are that sharp in the creek, they have not been there long... very nice looking rocks!

sometimes the rocks are too big,so i have to break them on site

I went out today to do some rock hounding. Didn't find a single rock.

Regardless of color, I think the material with orbs or figures will sell. I am crazy about orbed, figural stones ( like to imagine pictures in them like looking at clouds in the sky)  and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
