How are Chinese injecting quartz?
« on: December 07, 2019, 10:14:32 AM »

I'm confused about some of the clear quartz with "phantoms" coming out of China. Some if it gorgeous and looks exactly like high quality rutilated quartz (bronze  or gold color rutile)and some of the rutile is blue and other colors (which mimics dumortiertie in quartz). Some is even in star patterns. I think these things are being injected, because there is a hole and I think someone (was it here a few days ago) had showed a tip of the device used to inject accidentally left in. Is this quartz grown in a lab that has this injector left in while it is growing and then it is pulled or drilled out after it crystalizes leaving a small hole... or is it done to genuine quartz crystals somehow after they have formed? I'm really flabbergasted because I ordered a couple of tiny pieces (not cheap) a while ago and it just arrived - this stuff looks and feels unaltered from natural but ... better. Here is an example of a bracelet that could be real, but I suspect was made with this process, due to the many colors.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Natural-Colorful-Rutilated-Quartz-Crystal-Round-Beads-Bracelet-8mm-AAAA/362756957649?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D60709%26meid%3D760b63dc0bcb4d87bcc7ba7d35eae637%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D153745351187%26itm%3D362756957649%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

I seriously doubt that they are injecting anything into quartz. Though it is possible to laser-drill and add colorant, I suspect that all the fakes are simply glass. Asian scamsters have been selling glass as a variety of gems for a long time.

It doesn’t feel or look like glass. Will have to check the hardness and SG. Here’s a picture of a “crystal’ from one of these vendors. It is covered in druzy all the way around, which would seem impossible (shouldn’t it have broken off of a matrix somewhere and have one surface not covered in druzy?)
