Found on a gravel bar
« on: February 10, 2020, 03:42:04 PM »

Found several 12 to 24" pieces of this in a central texas river about 45 minutes from the gulf. Diameter is about 4". Outside looks like a worn down oak log. Cut the end off with a slab saw and not sure what it is. Any ideas? Thanks. -John

It's been identified! Calcite limb cast.

A little confused by the identification.  Are they saying that what you have is a limb cast made of Calcite?  It is clearly an agate and not calcite so are they saying that it is a limb cast that replaced with calcite and then the calcite eroded and it was replaced with agate a 2nd time?

I was told it is a limbcast made of calcite. I don't know, I'm new to this. I don't think it is agate. It is neither transluscent or banded. After looking at pictures online, I think it is definitely a limb cast. Open to suggestions on what mineral or minerals this is composed of.

You will get mixed answers from Jasper to Agate.  Definitely not Calcite though.
