Lortone LS14 Coolant Pump Filter Material
« on: July 04, 2020, 12:02:26 PM »

Great to be new to this forum - grateful for all your experience! I'm super happy to have just picked up the Lortone LS14 saw. It's almost new like and has been barely used. I'm just in the process of cleaning it (and searching forums like this for advice) and am wondering about a filter for the pump. I've read here a filter can help prevent the feed lines from clogging and the pump from bogging down. I need some advice as to what kind of filter and how to install. There was a piece of foam I found under the filter and am wondering if that's all I need or have you found a better way. How do you arrange the filter to prevent flow reduction? I don't want to burn out or damage the pump. I suppose if I create an external tank to circulate the oil the pump can be raised high enough in a 5gal bucket so sludge in the oil is less of a problem as it settles to the bottom and a filter won't be needed? Thanks for any help! Happy slabbing! PS - My handle OPJ stands for Ocean Picture Jasper, my favourite stone.

:hello2: Thanks Bill! I went to the mfg website but no info on the Teel Dayton pump. I'm no engineer but I guess I'll have to pick the right size foam density and hope it doesn't hit the impellers or have too much of a drag on output. A wood stand is being measured up and I'm half convinced an external oil bucket below will really helpful, expecially due to the volume of cutting I plan. (Did somebody say something about the ability of the pump to lift more than a foot or so? I imagine about a three foot rise from pump to blade.) The next thing will be to make a mist enclosure.  Cheers.

Seems like the best solution for me is put the pump directly in a hole cut in the lid of 20 litre bucket of mineral oil. Longer feed tubes to saw blade from pump and drain from front of basin to bucket. There's already a drain plug in front of tray. :toothy10: For the mist guard I'm going to find that clear flexible plastic so I can cover everything except the motor and drains inside the lip of tray. Front inspection flap. I expect strong magnets will keep it in place, and an light frame support. :coffee1:

I've got one of these saws that I have had since 1975. Mine has never had a filter on the pump. As a matter of fact I've never had to change the pump. The orginal pump is still running strong. For me I would not worry about the filter. These are tough saws. Keep an eye on the flow to the blades not a constant watch but check once in a great while. Everything on this saw is easy to get to to maintain. Enjoy your saw. Should you EVER need to change the pump get a water pump for a swamp cooler and put it in. That is what the pump in your saw is.

Great to hear, Thanks! I think I lucked out with this machine, no rust anywhere, little use. So that pump has lots of life in it. The only thing that occured is the three rubber feet on the base got squished flat from oil degradation but I'll remove that base when I suspend it in the bucket.

I would be very hesitant to put an obstructive filter over the intake.  I don't know what kind of pump you have so I can't say whether a blocked intake would damage it but I can definitely say that it will damage the blade.  I use a cascade filter system that guarantees clean oil to the pump with no chance of obstruction.  In my case it is just a small catch bucket that overflows into a five gallon bucket with the pump lifted a few inches off the bottom.  In addition to clean oil, I don't have to change the dirty oil and clean the saw regularly.  Just change the collection bucket when it gets full of sludge and on occasion clean the five gallon bucket.  If I really get ambitious I might use a steel spatula to scrape the bottom of the saw but it is not necessary.

The pumps often used in this saw are adapted from "swamp coolers" in the SW and the standard installment of a swamp cooler has a plastic mesh basket that the pump sits in to exclude big things.  The homemade version is made out of window screen material.  Either way you are trying to stop big stuff and not rock sludge.  The pumps can handle sludge until it becomes too thick (pudding anyone).  Check for cooler pump baskets or other permutations of the concept if you must buy one.

Here is one example.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Evaporative-Cooler-Mesh-Pump-Basket-42225/100048959
