Hello from Cleveland, Ohio
« on: October 19, 2020, 08:42:00 AM »

64 yr old, always loved 'pretty' rocks. Got the bug recently and went on my first 2 digs in North Carolina. Emerald Hollow Mine on day one. Messed around like a clueless child in the creek for an hour or so. Bought a salted bucket of dirt and washed the previously cleaned gemstones contained within. It was interesting and listening to all the rock-talk was enlightening. Didn't dig in the mine, which I learned is just an area of constantly plowed ground; though I saw many people walking back and forth with shovels and buckets. Saving it for next trip. The next day I went to The Little Pine Gem Mine to actually dig for garnets. Pull a few smallish ones out and have them in my National Geographic Tumbler. Looking forward to learning all about this awesome hobby.

Hey. I'm from the Cleveland area, now in Maryland. What part of town are you in, if you don't mind me asking? Nice to hear from a Clevelander. 🐱🌟

Welcome to the hobby and forum from CA.  My daughters live just outside Cleveland on the north east side and love it there!  You are a stones throw (with a good arm) from Herkimer, NY which I used to love digging at when in New York.  Going there in the beginning of the season after the rains you would find them all over the ground.

Herkimer is famous for double terminated Quartz crystals.  They are really gemmy and a delight to dig out.  I forget how many facets the normal Herkimer has but they call them Herkimer Diamonds for a reason.  The slow growth and conditions make for spectacular crystals.  Here is a good explanation of them with good pics of what they look like.   https://geology.com/articles/herkimer-diamonds.shtml

It does look like there is a mine for Garnets at Adirondack Park called the Barton mine.  I found a you tube video of a family collecting and they give an example of the ground which looks really good at 2 minutes 35 seconds into the video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRP30d7zkZE&feature=emb_title

Irock....I looked up Herkimer and watched several videos of trips. I may take an exploratory trip for a day soon and make plans for the spring/summer. It's awesome that there is a campground right across the street!  I'll have to look up the Barton Mine tonight.

Thanks for the tips!

When did you leave NR? If I remember...which is rare... :icon_jokercolor: it bounced back and forth twice and stuck with NRHS in 1974.

Left NR in the fall to go to college, still there summers, didn't notice they'd changed the name. NRHS makes more sense in the long run I guess.
