You could also look for something like this:

Robin got one from a dental college that was selling used ones, and it has worked well. Add the burs, a Jacobs chuck to hold them, and any kind of drip system and you'd be in business. Hers is a two-speed, but you only need the 1725 RPM low speed to carve.

gunsil, I did a little more searching and found this complete carving station.  It's available here:  https://arrowheadlapidarysupply.com/products/the-carvers-choice/4163/c57/

Thank you very much sir!! The Arrowhead Lapidary is similar to what I once saw and looks like what I would like.

Thanks vitz!! That is the same motor I have in my jewelry buffing machine. One of the best electric motors made. I would say it has more than enough torque for carving!!

gunsil what you are referring to are called 'point carvers' they are very popular with the Chinese carvers and I would suggest looking at one from China, not sure of manuf but they are often referred to as the 'green machine'.

There is a very cheap way to make one, get a power drill and mount it horizontally, put a good shield up to protect the motor from water and have a go. It takes a while to get used to the way of working.

One of the huge advantages of the point carvers is that you can use much larger burs which are very useful especially if you are doing larger than small pendant size carvings.
