curious as to what you think of this
« on: January 24, 2015, 07:37:44 AM »

Thanks for looking
A rock I found in the Fraser in the same place as the jade. It has been in the river for while a while and taken a lot of abuse so  the green material stands proud of the rest a bit which tells me it's harder; agate won't scratch it. It's around 3 SG, polishes easily. I initially thought it was a variolite but in magnification you can see that the green material looks like it was liquid at one point and there are filaments/lattice of it connecting the larger spots. Maybe another form of the sillimanite?????????

quick polish up to 3000grit

some close ups

going from the polished surface to the rough on top of the pic

This low colour picture highlites the green material

That is some strange stuff. The first photo looks like brecciated jade but the other photos reverse that and look like ? ? ?

those were my exact thoughts Jim ??????????????  Lots of head scratching going on with this one.  In general terms I guess it would be a plagioclase.

Thanks Ernie, I'm going too try a cab from it this spring. I don't know what is in between the green blobs Sara but It's hard to say. This is a pretty oxidized and beat up rock and just surface polished so I'll find out more when I cut

These are fairly common down here on the beach. Some folks like them for belt buckles because they are so hard and uniform.
