Digging New Material
« on: March 07, 2022, 05:43:21 PM »

Hi everyone,  figured since it is quiet and posts are few and between I'd post some new seam I have been digging.  Really wonderful contrast and colors and the plumes are nice and distinct.  Pretty hard digging which is the reason for the short sections.  Always fun to get some new eye candy from the ground.

The brilliance of the reds is tremendous.  And unlike many plumes they are distributed across the enitire slab width.

Incredibly good rough. There's nothing around here like that, for sure.

For some reason - maybe the size and pattern - it reminded my of Bay of Fundy flame agate. I think yours has better color!

And less fractures (at least those few pieces of BoF agate I've seen - they were quite fractured)!

Very nice-looking material... Are these cuts all the same perpendicular orientation to the seam, or have you tried angled cuts, or even cutting in the plane of the seam? I wonder what these plumes would look like "from above"...

Although quite unplanned as I was trying to free some of the vein the seam split angled thru the center of the seam.  The plume patterns are drawn out and gives it a unique look.  I have had this affect from other similar style of seams and makes the plumes look like 5 o'clock shadows getting much longer. I glued a piece up to get a slice of that pattern and will try and get it on the saw tomorrow.  I started a cab this morning from a small piece of the seam and it is turning out very nicely.  I'll try and get that finished and photo'd tomorrow also.

This is a piece that split at an angle thru the seam, not a parallel cut to the base.  I think that the pattern you see toward the top of this piece would be the parallel pattern.  Also the first cab I cut off an end piece of the seam.  I am going back a couple wheels and hit it again since I think I can get a better finish, this was a rushed cab.  Cab pic taken indoors with the cellphone so the color is a bit muted.

That pattern makes sense. I was hoping there would be some sort of order in the horizontal plane (relative to how this was formed), maybe radiating fingers from centers of plumes, but nature took a more chaotic approach. I guess we should better stick to cutting these kinds of seam agates along their vertical planes to reveal and appreciate the plumes.

I've been going back almost every day and looking at your pictures of these beautiful plume agates, like starting the day with a sunrise to remember.  What do you call these agates?
