Blue/Green banded rock ID?
« on: March 28, 2022, 11:36:34 AM »

Greetings all:  Been while since I have posted and it feels good to be back on this site.  I came across an interesting blue/green tightly banded rock that I figured was some sort of aventurine, but upon slicing, it does not transmit light, so it is primarily opaque, which surprised me.  It definitely occurs in layers when looking at the rough piece so something originally laid down as a series of beds, and then silicified.  It will not be scratched by a nail, and somewhat redundantly I even splashed with muriatic to no reaction, so is rather hard in the jasper/agate range, and it has just a bit of porosity.  Thinking maybe a banded jasper or brightly colored rhyolite?  Does some of the Ocean Jasper look anything like this?  Most interested in a name and place of origin.  Can't wait to make goodies out of it given its colors!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

So I ran this past a colleague Wes Lingerfelt and he stated that when he was up there digging out the Gary Green deposits alongside Ray Larson, some of the areas had both these colors and tight layering, so I am satisfied given the physical properties of calling this a flow banded rhyolite a.k.a. Gary Green.  Just submitting this to those who might take a peek, but I consider the question answered and matter resolved.

Yep. We have had a couple of pieces like that. Some of the nicer material to ever come out of there in my book.

Haven't seen any like that come out of the new, deeper, deposits they've been working up there these days. Good for you!
