Hi!

I'm Sarah from Portland. I've always been a low key rockhound and joined our local rock club several years ago but was busy with family so just rejoined this year! I've been trying out the lapidary studio and love it, I just inherited someone's grandfather's lapidary equipment and bins and bins of material (the grandfather was from Minnesota but he traveled around), some slabbed and some rough. It has been in storage for 20 years but mostly seems to be in decent shape, I came here for advice in set up, equipment and mutual love for rocks!

Welcome! Sounds like you've got all it takes to enjoy creating...

Like with any other hobby or job - make sure to learn about potential risks involved, and how to mitigate them. In lapidary arts, main concerns should be silicosis, injuries from rotating machinery, electrocution, and going broke.

I love your signature, by the way - very brief and very telling!

Hi Sarah, Welcome to the forum from the McKenzie River.  What kind of toys did you inherit?  It's great to have a nudge like that to get you going.
Love to see pics of equipment and rocks so share if you can.

Hi Bill, it definitely felt a little bit like fate, I have been going over what type of equipment I want to *save up for* and then this opportunity came into play. I have not set anything up yet but I have some pictures so I'll post them!

There is a 15" beacon star flat lap, a lortone beaver arbor (I don't think it's been used, just stored, theres a receipt for purchase in '95), a highland park b50 arbor, 2 1/3hp motors, some polishing wheels of various grits and usage, about 8 10" diamond saw blades of various usage (one new) 2 18" diamond saw blades (one new), 2 trim saws that seem to be in rough shape but need to take a closer look at and bins of rocks!

All of this stuff had been stored for 20 years in Minnesota and the guy I got it from got it in 2020 when his grandfather passed away, he brought it all back to Portland but was moving back and decided he couldn't take it.

I tried to post the pictures but I think they were too big, I'll try to post them separately.

Welcome from the west coast. Most trim saws look like crap after a bit of use but there is not a lot to go wrong on them . The Beaver arbor will probably only last another 25 years. Diamond wheels are better than they were in the time the equipment was used . Have fun.

Thank you for thr welcome and the tips! I'll be cleaning off the trim saws soon and seeing what needs to be done to them
