New Guy - who can't spel.
« on: August 08, 2022, 12:02:00 PM »

Hello all!
James from Spokane, WA~

Came here to find tips on carving and tools for carving jade. I find quite a few specimens in alluvial pebbles and cobbles in the river and 'see' the story trying to burst out! I'm no artist but I feel it it helps me not be so angry as I have to concentrate on the work. At this point, I feel fossicking around is a lot of fun, and tumbling minerals doesn't return as much joy as I thought it would.

I hope to learn a lot of good information from you folks!

Peace!

Welcome to the forum. You came to the right place. Here's a link to an archived carving board the current owners preserved for all.

The great info on the old version of this forum would have been lost if not for the current owners.

Welcome... and give the stones time to work.   I spent 8 years in the Air Force, mostly working in places with no windows and not spoken of. The rocks have been a blessing in many ways. I find humanity can be highly overrated.
Anyway, keep looking for what makes you feel more at peace with the rocks. My first choice is in looking for stone to turn into cabochons and I loved tumble polishing. While I cannot be cutting cabochons all the time you can just let the tumbler run hope for some beauties to appear. Rule 1 in my book: Junk in gets junk out. It takes time to find out what material yields really nice, tumbled stone so give it time. I still get some bad pieces in every batch. keep trying and good luck
