back up the Deadman
« on: March 24, 2015, 08:49:56 AM »

The hounding season is back on!!!!! I hoped the area I went to had some more material come down off the cliffs but there was so little snow this year that the ravine I collect this material from was just lightly washed. It was enough to unearth a good 5 gallon pail; 150lbs, of material though so it was a pretty good day on sunday.
This piece is about 1lb. I had to leave a 75# boulder hidden in the bush because I was too tired to go back up.
thanks for looking

Thanks guys, yeah, the colours are real nice in this stuff but the orange is actually a little redder is the only difference from the picture. I'm going to try to get to all the hard climbing spots while the weather is cooler, it's murder going up those hills in 36C heat. I went up to the bottom cliffs in the redskin agate area a couple of wknds ago and found a few nice ones; the top 2 cliffs are even better but there was still snow there. I like these because the red skin is actually as hard as the agate.

Thanks Amanda
the ones on the bottom cliff have more of the quartz fill look, but the quartz is actually backed/filled with agate but the top two benches are banded with the odd coloured one occasionally

Did some cutting on the piece I showed earlier and the colours in this pic show the red a little better; still not vivid enough. The piece on the left is a beautiful apple green sillimanite that rivals the Guatemalan jadeite of the same colour but has closer packed crystal so is easier to work

Thanks bgast and Ernie; I don't know any local carvers but I think the red skin would be great to integrate into some kind of carving to show it off

I am so jealous. I find all kinds of reds and yellows but apple green is not on my score sheet. Further south somewhere. I have to say "atta boy" for that one.

Thanks Jim
I probably wouldn't have picked it up except for the sleet was getting everything wet and it kind of glowed, I got snowed on real good at the redskin agate hill the same day.
I have to thank Frank for identifying this material and making me think about the possibilities it had to offer after researching it a bit more. I seem to find another colour every time I go there :)
