Feldspar cabs
« on: June 29, 2015, 08:23:46 AM »

My daughter has been up visiting for the last few days so we've been busy rockhounding and stuff.
her fording a creek which I'd wanted to look at for a while so we went there to escape the heat on Friday.

yesterday we went up to the old lime stone mine to collect quartz crystal; slim pickings because it is a well known site but large; up to 2ft. terminated crystal  are known from here when the mine was operating 30 yrs. ago. Now it is a sea of white quartz dump piles scattered in the undergrowth and pine/spruce forest. It had to have been 120F in the open areas we were breaking quartz looking for crystals; and blazing sun.....
A couple of cabochons of 40mm. feldspar my buddy showed me at his place where we went for a couple of cool ones after the trip, that he made from material from another local site

Those feldspar crystals are much more rectangular then the average. If the quartz crystal site has clear quartz that looks fuzzy  or hazy it could be good for cutting star stones. I keep looking but the San Diego area is the only place I am aware of in North America where sar quartz is found. Nice to get out with my daughter and I am sure it was nice to share with her on that hot day. Keep your hat on.

yeah, those feldspars are beautys Frank, did you see the size of those cabs? 40mm, so those crystals are huge!!! It was way too hot to put much effort into busting quartz rock up after hiking in to the old mine site but I'm going back up on a cooler day and tyring again; biggest we found was a 3cm. single terminated I found and I'm just cleaning them right now to see what's there.
On another subject Frank, I am missing the reply and quote button from your rockhounding picnic post at Joshua"s so I can't put my two cents in; 1 1/2 in Canadian money LOL

Frank, you'll notice my daughter wasn't carrying a 75lb. pack of rocks LOL  although she could have used it to keep her footing. Here's the largest quartz point I found at the old mine site; clear at the top and milky going into the quartz matrix
