Phoenix area rock shops?
« on: June 15, 2017, 01:25:25 PM »

I have a friend who lives in the Phoenix metro area.  He is not a rockhound but is looking for someplace to buy some rock for a friend whos into rocks, gems and minerals. Hes looking for rough as well as some finished stones.  He may also be sending me some of the rough to work on for him as well.  I do not have knowledge of the rock shop situation in AZ (outside of Quartzsite) so I told him I'd check with you guys.  Any recommendations for the Phoenix area I can pass along?

There was Rockizona but I think that's closed now.  The sons were running the business and wanted nothing to do with it and their goal was to liquidate it as soon as their Parents were gone...

There is a Rock shop run by an elderly gentleman on Williamsfield Road in Gilbert. It's called Natural Expressions.   I've been there a few times with my friend Gina.  Cool place.  Best to visit it in the fall/Winter/Early Spring though - no AC and most items are outside in the blazing sun with no shelter.   http://www.naturalexpressions-inc.com/

As incredulous as this may seem, there are not really any rock shops of the caliber of this forum in this town.  Especially when AZ is 80% rock versus organic material, that is hard to believe!  Fortunately we have Quartzite and Tuscon, but then that is January.  You can "hound" everywhere, and there are sites that feature where the best places to mine. My favorite is is Arizonarockhound.com.  The cost is $20.00 / year and it gives you a lot of great directions to sites.  If you have a rugged vehicle, preferably 4WD, that can handle the terrain.
One good pace is Burro Creek, which is about 70 mile north of Wickenburg, which is a BLM managed area.  Always, always, bring plenty of water and watch for snakes.  Even in so called winter here.

I'll put a plug in for Gallery TCR in Tempe. Dean and Rocky own the place and regularly advertise on Craigslist. They sponsor shows with a handful of vendors over weekends during the winter months. They are at 906 S. Priest, suite 107. My favorite activity there is the bucket sales. They'll let you paw through the back lot of material from estate purchases. Tons of rock to choose from at $30/bucket, I've never been disappointed!
