Evening at the reservoir
« on: August 08, 2016, 09:52:50 PM »

Drove out to a local old reservoir and hiked around it for a while two evenings ago. Light was fading so didn't do a ton, and also didn't find much, but there are some small agate deposits in the area. Just mostly enjoyed the scenery (and a random, unexpected picnic dinner by the lake with some neighbors! I crashed their party by accident and they had extra food. :)

This was in a wash behind the reservoir, on top of a pile of rock, all covered in moss and lichen and bearing zero resemblance to the rock around it. Dunno where it came from, but not where I found it!

Small agate pieces. Lots of the teardrop and wedge-shaped agate nodules in a bank near the reservoir.

And a cool sage brush trunk.

Will go back with more daylight and poke around for bigger agates. Picked up some interesting-looking jasper/agate chunks there too but they photographed badly and I'll wait till I have something cut.

Driftwood looks like a seahorse.  Sounds like a fun outing.

That second one looks like a nice piece of plume agate. Reminds me of Stinkingwater on the outside. Love to see what the inside looks like...

I was just down there for a few days. I spent my daughter's inheritance at Richardson's and found a great clay deposit about 15 miles north of Antelope. It seems like a cool summer down there.

That's what I thought too. Soon! Counting down the days 'till I get the saw. The area where I found it has been used as a campsite for 100+ years (was the end point in a sheep route to the reservoir). So it very well could be Stinkingwater with anthropogenic placement.

Nice! I'm glad you found the clay. (I thought Richardsons looked a little busier than usual...) It has been a cool summer, only a few days of over 100 and a lot of cool, overcast days. Water budget is doing well too, both with less heat and a lot more conservation. Both spring-fed reservoirs are much higher than they were last summer at this time.

This is from a road cut near the reservoir. tiny gravelly baby agates.

Some come in the weirdest fun shapes

And some of them are nice inside, if just the common banding.
