Finished a Few Cabs Today
« on: November 30, 2014, 02:49:35 PM »

Hi everyone, I thought I'd post the cabs I worked on this weekend.  The sun made the pics a lot brighter than I thought it would, even though most of my back yard was in shade by this time; I had to take the pics at an angle to try to cut out the surface glare.  I could have finished a couple more but the flies were driving me insane- there was an inordinate quantity of them out there, with at least 15 on or near me at all times.

These are all from rough Amanda wanted cabbed:

This one is ridiculously humungous and was very hard to squish onto my little pixie

A scrap piece salvaged from the slab that made the above cab.  Pic seems a little blurry...

I tried to capture the metallic plumes in this as well as the druzy- this is bad ass material.

part of a set of Rhioolite she wanted :D  I just invented a new name.

These cabs are from a could of slabs off a piece of Lepidolite I managed to swindle a coworker into letting me cut.  The crystals in it were really big compared to the Lepidolite I am used to seeing so I wanted to see what it turned out like.  It was easy to cab, although the smaller piece started out a lot larger but had a couple of nasty imperfections that surfaced as I ground down the face so I just cut them out; not the highest grade material in the world, but it is very sparkly in the sun!!!  :D  I have to let him choose his favorite and he's going to give it to his wife.  I suppose I'll let him have both, I just wanted to work the material.

End cut

What's left of the second cut

I did sneak one of my own in- this is from an end cut of a small piece crazy lace I have around somewhere

Gina, bring a small spray bottle with you that is clean and free of any soaps or chemicals.  I have something organic to put into it that will free you from the pesky flies.  I used this stuff religiously back east for the same purpose and mosquitoes, and I managed to get more of it shipped here since I'm going to be doing a lot more outdoor work and didn't want to be eaten alive.

The cabs are of course gorgeous.
The Crazy lace is awesome, the CJ Strike Jasper rocks! and of course the Bird's eye rhyolite is beautiful.   :blob1: :headbang: :hello2: :icon_sunny:
I cannot wait to see them this Friday!

Those are all beauties and I like the way you photographed them in the mud.

LOL Mud makes everything look good in comparison, doesn't it???  You never hear anyone saying, "WOW that mud is really nice!"

That is a rock I collected on one of our rock hounding expeditions last spring- I think it was when we went out to the Black Hills looking for fire agate but I'm not 100% sure on that.  I thought it was pretty cool lookin'- it even has lichen on it on one side.  :D

I have the perfect antidote to flie- 10 degree F nights and days below 20. We still have our Anna's hummingbirds though as we usually do all winter. It is nice to see someone who cuts such a diversity of things. I know the feeling of just wanting to cut something just for the experience. If you ever buy lepidolite rough keep it out of the sun as it will turn brown from the uv. Thanks.

Thanks for that tip Frank, I have a couple of different colors of the sugar grain sized Lepidolite, so that is very good to know.

I already lost one of the cabs...  The second one- it was on my kitchen counter and now it's not, I can't find it anywhere!  It's a good thing I got a picture of it- it's like the one that got away now.  :(
